A Kind Way to View People with Disabilities
There is no greater disability in society than
the inability to see a person as more.
Robert M. Hensel
At this point in my life, I cannot walk, and I use a wheelchair when I go out. Some people see me as being disabled. Although not able to do some of the things that I used to love doing, I am still very able to live my life fully. I am not disabled.
My experiences have given me a glimpse into the lives of other people who are experiencing a limited ability in some form. I have thought a lot about the way that people see those who are not functioning in the world in what is considered a normal way.
I looked for videos that could help me to shine a different light on the subject, and I was pleased to find a few that help. I invite you to take a few minutes to watch them. I believe that you will be glad that you did.
There are a few basic guidelines that we need to know in order to relate to people with disabilities in a way that shows them respect.
How to Talk to People with Disabilities
Many people have embraced their disability and are living happy lives. They are not disabled. They are people first and they happen to have a disability, which us nothing to be ashamed of.
Things People with Disabilities Wish You Knew
In Indonesia, where most people thought that disabled meant useless, a young man with severe limitations did what seemed impossible. He became a successful photographer. He also designed and, with the help of his friends, built a car that he could drive.
The Photographer with No Hands and Legs
A young boy had a form of hyperactivity that he could not control, until a teacher, Mr. Jensen, saw in him what no one else could. It changed his life and set him on the path of a successful life and career.
